Mohammed Sani Umar of Chanchaga area of Minna, in Niger state has been arrested for raping an eight-year-old girl.
Umar, who is 70years of age, reportedly raped the minor twice raped before giving her the sum of N80 to keep his dastardly act a secret.
According to reports, the mother of the minor had observed the abnormal behaviour of her daughter and decided to interrogate the minor who revealed that the septuagenarian defiled her.
The mother disclosed that her daughter was sick for some weeks and despite every form of treatment, she remained ill.
"A neighbour advised me to keep a close watch on the girl, which I started doing", the mother revealed.
"After some days, I saw some stains in her underwear and asked her what happened to her".
The reports revealed that the little girl, following the mother's probing and persuasiveness, took the mother to the home of the septuagenarian where she just pointed at him.
It was further revealed that on sighting the girl and her mother in tow, Sani Umar reportedly began begging them to cover it up that he will take responsibility.
The woman started crying and shouted for help. People came around, dragged him to the family house, where he was beaten and confessed that he had sex with her twice.
Abubakar, an uncle to the minor disclosed that Umar was beaten by angry members of the community, before he was interrogated and handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
"Umar, on interrogation, said that he gave her N50 once and another N30 the second time", Abubakar revealed.
"We took him to the police custody and handed him to the police to charge him to court", he added.
The family and community members have appealed to the police to handle the matter professionally, following fears that the police could sweep the case under the carpet, because of fear that Umar is influential in the society.
Divisional Police Officer of the Chanchaga Division has asssured that the case would be forwarded to the State Command on Monday.
"We want the police to do the right thing because the man is very influential and has some people who usually bail criminals arrested by the police", a source pleaded.
"He knows the rich people in the community and there is a possibility they would conspire with the police to release the man and sweep the matter under the carpet".
"The police should ensure justice is served right in this case", the family urged.
