VCN: 32 Vets Step Out, Eye Blue Economy Boom”

The Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) has inducted 32 new veterinary doctors from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, charging them to play a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s blue economy through improved aquatic animal health and innovation.

The induction took place during the 17th Oath-Taking and Induction Ceremony for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) graduands, held at the university’s Richard Kimbir Senate Building on Friday.

Administering the oath, VCN Registrar, Fadipe Oladotun, formally welcomed the graduands into the veterinary profession, urging them to uphold its ethics and standards.

In his keynote lecture, guest speaker, Dr. Benedict Muyiwa, CEO of Oceanblue Afrique Consulting Limited, Abuja, charged the inductees to align veterinary practice with emerging opportunities in Nigeria’s blue economy…”

Benedict underscored the growing importance of veterinary medicine in Nigeria’s blue economy, particularly in safeguarding aquatic animal health, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable economic growth.

Speaking on the theme, “Veterinary Medicine at the Frontier: Unlocking Aquatic Animal Health and the Blue Economy in Nigeria,” Benedict encouraged the new veterinarians to embrace innovation, continuous learning, and interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle emerging challenges in animal health systems, especially within the aquatic sector.

He further noted that veterinary professionals remain central to national development through disease control, food safety, zoonotic disease prevention, livestock development, and environmental sustainability.

Also addressing the inductees, VCN President, Mathew Adamu, urged them to maintain professionalism and ethical conduct while contributing meaningfully to research, innovation, and quality veterinary service delivery.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), C. D. Tuleun, congratulated the graduates and commended the VCN for sustaining high standards in veterinary education and practice.
