NITDA, NISO Forge Digital Power Alliance to Drive Nigeria’s Energy Revolution

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) have begun moves to establish a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating digital transformation in Nigeria’s power sector and strengthening the infrastructure needed to support the nation’s digital economy.

The partnership emerged from a high-level meeting between the two organisations, where NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, stressed that reliable electricity remains the foundation for technological advancement, economic growth and sustainable digital innovation.

Inuwa said the rapid growth of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, data centres and digital services, has made stable power supply a critical requirement for attracting investment and expanding Nigeria’s digital economy.

He commended NISO for integrating technology into its operations from inception, describing the organisation as a forward-looking institution capable of delivering greater efficiency and value to the electricity sector.

The NITDA Chief Executive noted that the agency’s mandate goes beyond technology regulation, adding that it has supported digital transformation efforts in several public institutions and is ready to extend similar expertise to NISO.

He proposed the creation of a joint technical team to identify priority areas and develop a framework for implementing the partnership.

Speaking earlier, NISO Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, said the collaboration would help build a technology-driven electricity management system capable of improving grid reliability and operational efficiency.

Mohammed explained that NISO, created after the unbundling of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, is responsible for system operations, electricity market administration and power system planning.

He disclosed that NISO has commenced the deployment of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled meters across strategic points in the electricity value chain to provide real-time data on generation, transmission and distribution activities.

According to him, access to timely operational data would enhance decision-making, improve grid management and strengthen transparency within the power sector pending the completion of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) project.

The proposed NITDA-NISO partnership is expected to boost innovation, improve accountability and create a more attractive environment for investments that rely on dependable energy and digital infrastructure.
