FIBA Recognises Abdullahi As NBBF President, Backs New Board
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has recognised Dr Mustapha Abdullahi as President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for the 2026–2030 tenure, affirming the outcome of the federation’s elective congress held on October 15.
FIBA Secretary-General, Andreas Zagklis, conveyed the recognition in a letter dated October 19, 2026, congratulating Abdullahi and other members of the newly elected board.
In the letter addressed to the new president, FIBA reaffirmed its commitment to good governance and electoral processes conducted in line with the NBBF constitution and applicable regulations of the international basketball governing body.
The international federation also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing board led by Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, as the NBBF begins a new four-year administration.
FIBA’s recognition is expected to strengthen the legitimacy of the new leadership as it prepares to reposition Nigerian basketball through improved administration, grassroots development and stronger domestic competitions.
Abdullahi’s emergence comes with expectations of renewed efforts to improve athletes’ welfare, discover and nurture young talents, and strengthen both men’s and women’s basketball across the country.
The new administration is also expected to build on existing structures while pursuing reforms aimed at expanding opportunities for aspiring players and improving the competitiveness of Nigerian teams in continental and international competitions.
With the recognition by FIBA, attention is expected to shift to how the new board will translate its mandate into measurable progress for Nigerian basketball, particularly in talent development, effective governance and the country’s representation on the global stage.
