NISO CONFIRMS PARTIAL GRID DISTURBANCE, SAYS POWER RESTORED NATIONWIDE

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) on Tuesday, gave confirmation of a partial disturbance which had occurred on the nation's electricity grid on Monday, January 27, 2026, but however clarified that the incident did not amount to a total system collapse.

According to a statement issued by NISO management, the disturbance occurred at approximately 10:48 a.m. and originated from the Gombe Transmission Substation. The voltage disturbance subsequently spread across the network, affecting the Jebba, Kainji and Ayede Transmission Substations.

The incident led to the tripping of some transmission lines and generating units, resulting in a partial system collapse in affected areas. However, NISO said swift corrective measures were immediately deployed to stabilize the grid.

Restoration efforts commenced at about 11:11 a.m. and were successfully completed shortly after, with electricity supply fully restored across the impacted regions.

NISO emphasized that only parts of the national grid were affected, contrary to reports by some media outlets suggesting a total grid collapse. The operator assured Nigerians that the power system is now stable and operating normally.
