Five transmission towers along the Ikot Abasi–Eket 132kV Double Circuit Transmission Line have collapsed following extensive vandalism, raising concerns over the stability of electricity supply to parts of Akwa Ibom State.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed this in a statement, saying the damage was discovered during a routine joint patrol by its linesmen on August 9, 2026.

According to the company, critical structural bracing members were removed from Towers N9, J4, N10, N11 and N12, resulting in their collapse.

TCN said further inspection of the transmission corridor revealed that structural components had also been removed from seven other towers—J3, N8, N13, N14, N15, N18 and N19—leaving them structurally compromised and vulnerable to further collapse.

The company described the development as a serious act of vandalism capable of disrupting electricity transmission and compromising the reliability of the network.

To minimise the impact on electricity supply, TCN said it had reconfigured the network to prioritise power supply to Ekim Transmission Station, while Ibom Power remains the only station currently without supply.

The transmission company said its management was mobilising an urgent intervention to reconstruct the affected sections of the line.

It added that security agencies had been notified to assist with investigations and prevent further vandalism along the transmission corridor.

TCN condemned the destruction of the transmission infrastructure as an act of sabotage, stressing that the incident posed a threat to efforts to maintain a stable and reliable national electricity grid.

The company also reiterated its commitment to restoring the affected infrastructure and strengthening the transmission network.
