The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has received the Christian Icon Award from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in recognition of his public service and commitment to values of faith, integrity, compassion and sacrifice.

Akume received the award on Saturday at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, during CAN’s 50th anniversary celebration, describing the honour as a humbling affirmation of the values that have guided his journey in public service.

In his remarks, the SGF said the award carried a responsibility to serve the nation with greater humility and dedication, stressing that leadership should be defined by sacrifice and service rather than privilege.

“I am deeply humbled and profoundly honoured to receive the prestigious Christian Icon Award. I receive this award with great humility, gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility,” he said.

Akume noted that the recognition went beyond his personal achievements, adding that he accepted it on behalf of his family, colleagues, associates and Nigerians he had had the privilege of serving.

He commended CAN for its contributions to the Christian community and national development over the past five decades, noting that the association had remained an important voice in promoting faith, peace, unity, moral values and national cohesion.

According to him, religious institutions have a critical role to play in addressing the challenges confronting Nigeria by promoting tolerance, compassion, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship.

“For fifty years, CAN has remained an important voice. At a time when our nation, like many societies around the world, faces complex challenges, the responsibility of religious institutions to promote peace, tolerance, compassion and responsible citizenship has never been greater,” Akume stated.

The SGF reaffirmed his commitment to the success of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying he remained conscious of the responsibility entrusted to him by the President and the need to contribute to building a prosperous, peaceful and united Nigeria.

“As Secretary to the Government of the Federation, I remain profoundly conscious of the enormous responsibility entrusted to me by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and of the duty to contribute to the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda and to the building of a more prosperous, peaceful and united Nigeria,” he said.

Akume dedicated the award to Nigerians who serve their communities and the country selflessly, often without public recognition, as well as young Nigerians whose energy and creativity, he said, represent the promise of a greater nation.

He congratulated CAN on its golden jubilee, expressing hope that the association would achieve greater milestones in the next 50 years and deepen its contributions to peace, stability and national development.

The SGF further pledged that the award would inspire him to discharge his responsibilities with greater diligence, humility and commitment to national unity and progress.

He prayed for God’s continued blessings on CAN and the country, expressing hope for a Nigeria that would stand as a beacon of peace, justice, prosperity and hope.

“May God continue to bless the Christian Association of Nigeria and may He continue to unite our people, prosper our nation and make Nigeria a beacon of peace, justice, prosperity and hope,” he said.
