The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, saying the administration’s infrastructure projects and economic reforms deserve recognition and continuity.
Umahi also called on the people of Kano State to support Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for a second term, citing his leadership, inclusive governance and commitment to peace, unity and development.
The minister made the appeal on Tuesday during a town hall meeting at the Coronation Hall in Kano, ahead of the commissioning of outstanding works on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway, Section I, Lot 1 (Zaria-Kano).
According to a statement issued by Mohammed A. Ahmed, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Works, Umahi said the Federal Government’s infrastructure drive reflected its determination to reposition the economy and improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
He described the removal of petroleum subsidy and other economic policy decisions as difficult but necessary measures to place the country on the path of sustainable growth and prosperity.
“The worst is over. The darkest part of the morning is the dawn. We are moving into prosperity as a result of the hard decisions occasioned by the reforms,” the minister said.
He urged Nigerians to remain patient with the administration, arguing that continuity in leadership would enable the country to consolidate the gains of ongoing reforms and sustain infrastructure development.
Umahi also dismissed the perception that the South-East was opposed to Tinubu’s administration, reaffirming the zone’s commitment to national unity and the President’s development agenda.
He said the Federal Government’s investments in road infrastructure and other sectors were increasingly demonstrating the benefits of its reform policies, urging Nigerians to support the administration’s second-term ambition.
The minister commended Governor Yusuf for what he described as exemplary environmental sanitation and cleanliness across Kano, saying the state’s neat streets reflected purposeful leadership and responsible management of public resources.
“I am yet to see another state that is beating Kano in cleanliness. In all the streets we passed through, you could pick a pin,” he said.
He praised the governor for bringing together political leaders, a former governor, prominent indigenes and other stakeholders, describing the gesture as evidence of inclusive governance and a willingness to accommodate diverse interests for the collective good of the state.
Umahi urged Kano residents to reciprocate the governor’s efforts by supporting his second-term bid, adding that his approach to governance deserved recognition.
The minister also advocated greater opportunities for engineers to occupy leadership positions, arguing that their technical expertise, professional experience and problem-solving abilities could enhance governance and accelerate infrastructure delivery.
He expressed appreciation for the peaceful atmosphere and unity he witnessed in Kano, saying his experience had positively influenced his perception of the state and encouraged him to reconsider his departure date.
Earlier, Governor Yusuf commended the Federal Government for its commitment to infrastructure development, particularly the road projects aimed at improving transportation, connectivity and economic activities in Kano and the wider North-West region.
He described the scheduled commissioning of the Zaria-Kano section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway as a significant milestone in the country's infrastructure development efforts.
The governor said the project would strengthen road transportation and facilitate economic activities, while expressing gratitude to Tinubu for the infrastructure interventions and other support extended to Kano State.
Yusuf also expressed optimism about the successful commissioning of the project.
The Federal Ministry of Works reiterated its commitment to delivering durable, safe and quality road infrastructure across the country in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
