The Federal Government has handed over the construction of a new Carter Bridge in Lagos to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), citing serious structural defects discovered in the existing bridge and the nearby 3rd Mainland Bridge.

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, who performed the handover on Wednesday, said investigations dating back to 2013 revealed worsening underwater damage, with some supporting piles already dislodged. He explained that experts advised against repairs, noting that rebuilding would be more cost-effective.

Umahi disclosed that the new bridge, valued at N545 billion and expected to be completed in 36 months, will feature a modern cable-stayed section to enhance navigation and aesthetics. Funding will be sourced through a mix of government contribution and external borrowing.

Meanwhile, the Minister announced the emergency closure of one carriageway of Eko Bridge from midnight on Sunday, May 10, following severe structural damage caused by illegal sand mining activities. He said the incident destroyed multiple supporting piles, weakening the bridge.

Umahi assured that urgent repair works, including lifting a bridge span for structural intervention, would commence immediately, while the remaining carriageway stays open to traffic. He appealed for public patience, stressing the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and critical infrastructure.
